Canadian General-Tower in Cambridge, Ont. has been fined $100,000 in connection with the May 2018 injury of a worker.

According to a release from the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development, CGT is a "manufacturer of pool liners and vinyl products used in the building and automotive industries."

The company pleaded guilty, the ministry said late Wednesday.

According to documents, CGT has had two previous convictions under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Documents show the injury happened when two workers were cleaning a moving conveyor belt and one of them was trapped by it.

The belt operator was up a ladder scraping while another worker who was assisting stood on the floor.

When the operator left the area, the assisting worker stepped onto the ladder's second rung to reach into the rotating belt to wipe it and "while cleaning, the assisting worker was pulled by the rotating belt into the idler roller of the conveyor and trapped," the Ministry statement said.

Other workers nearby tried to rescue the trapped person but the worker suffered critical injuries.

The Ministry of Labour investigation into the incident found "the employer failed to ensure that machinery was only cleaned when motion that may endanger a worker had stopped."

In addition to the fine, the court imposed a 25 per cent victim surcharge which goes into a government fund to help victims of crime.
